Questa edizione fa parte della collana «Plain Wrapper Poets» (n. 2) e comprende due poesie di Andrea Zanzotto, riprodotte in originale, assieme alla traduzione in inglese di Beverly Allen, e a due incisioni di Joe Tilson. Una nota dell’autore accompagna la poesia Circo-Cocò: «Circo-Cocò, verso 29. Befehle (ordini, comandi, ingiunzioni) è parola tedesca, ma più che altro dialettale, per quanto, ormai poco usata. Befèl, pl. Befèi (col valore di lunghe, pesanti argomentazioni per ingiungere)». In calce al volume, invece, Allen propone un breve saggio intitolato On translating Zanzotto, di cui si riproduce la prima parte: «Translating Zanzotto’s poetry is like wrestling with a myriad of minuscule angels. The translation process – always inevitably interpretive – here encounters a splendid play of arbitrariness, a constantly multi-faceted motivation in the original signs. The translator’s task is to find the fine line where the English will be as “readable” – as ready for or restive to interpretation – as the Italian, no more and no less. To attempt the transposition of such a delicate linguistic balancing act as is Zanzotto’s poetry from one language to another risks the equilibrium of the whole, risks causing meaning to appear where none is intended or to disappear where it is vital. The translator is caught at an ambiguous moment when a dream of bridging Babelian chasms is interruptedby a waking acknowledgement of the way words incorporate ideas. Changing words changes ideas, and the original which inspires translations is the thing which, in translation, always gets lost».

«This edition, limited to one hundred fifty copies and signed by the author and the artist, was printed on an 1847 Washington handpress by Gabriel Rummonds and Alessandro Zanella at the Plain Wrapper Press in Verona, Italy. The type is handset Spectrum. Golda Fishbein lettered the title. The paper, which was printed damp, was handmade at the Cartiere Miliani-Fabriano exclusively for the PWP. The etchings were pulled by Giorgio Upiglio in Milano and the printing of the text was completed in October 1979. The project is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., a Federal Agency. All rights reserved».
